Stark’s Heart
Benefiting Stark’s Little Heart Foundation
This piece is dedicated to my great nephew, Stark. He was born a little over two years ago with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome, a congenital heart defect, which is a condition where the left side of the heart is underdeveloped, necessitating the right side of the heart pump all the blood with no help from the left side. This little guy had open heart surgery at 6 days old, then another open heart surgery at 6 months old, yet another at a year-and-a-half, and most recently he has received a heart transplant a few days before Thanksgiving 2014. He is a phenomenally resilient baby and came through the surgeries well. His doctors, nurses and other care givers at Children’s Hospital in Dallas Texas are amazingly gifted people. This baby boy could not be loved more by his family; he has great parents and a sweet and gentle older brother. I’ve been very moved by his journey through life and felt compelled to design a piece of jewelry in his honor. Part of the proceeds of the sale of this piece will go to benefit his Stark’s Little Heart funding effort, which was created to help his parents offset some of Stark’s medical expenses. This piece uses orientation, space
and absence to symbolize several
things. First the piece is literally
upside down from the other pieces I
have done in the Isosceles Series,
representing how Starks heart
condition has turned his families
lives upside down.
Second, the central image of the
heart is pierced or open all the way
through, for his open heart surgery.
For the viewer the left side of the
heart is smaller. That’s for the little
left side of his heart.
The arched flat surface of the piece
is satin finished with the transition
from the flat to the central image of
the open heart a high polished bevel.
Stark’s Heart measures about 5/8 of
an inch across at the top, tapering
down to 1/8 inch at the bottom.
It arches to an overall thickness of ¼
inch with a generous oval shaped
bail opening size of ¼ inch by 1/8
inch. The piece comes with a 2mm
genuine black leather round cord
that is adjustable from 16 inches to
24 inches long.
